The river, named Newport, rises in Lake Pocosin and empties into the Beaufort Inlet. This was the highway early settlers traveled to reach what they referred to as the rich upland country. It was rough country, mainly forest. Today it is a busy little town where many Marine families and civilian have settled because it still has the small town, friendly atmosphere that is often hard to find. Entering Newport you will find a welcome that clearly says it all “The Town With Old Fashioned Courtesy”.
Newport is ideally located between Havelock, home of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, and Morehead City. You will discover timely access to work, shopping and the beach.
