Morehead City www.townofmorehead.com is part of the Crystal Coast located in Carteret County, at the southern tip of North Carolina’s Outer Banks. It has a population of 9680. Morehead City was named for John Motley Morehead, the 29th governor of North Carolina. The area’s fishing industry was enhanced by railroad expansions in the mid-1800’s
Local attractions are Ft. Macon State Park www.crystalcoast.com/fortmacon (home of the actual Ft. Macon which was built in the 1830’s and has guarded our shoreline during several wars), Cape Lookout, the Rachel Carson preserve, and the aquarium in Pine Knoll Shores. The Maritime Museum in nearby Beaufort attracts many visitors. Of particular interest are the artifacts on display from the Queen Anne’s Revenge, Blackbeard’s ship.
Until recently Morehead City was known more as a resort community than a major port. A large charter-fishing fleet, the proximity to Atlantic Beach and the ICW, have all served to promote Morehead City as an excellent place to spend a summer vacation. Many people leave the cold weather of the North to spend some time in the sun and warmth of Morehead. It is unusual to find a North Carolinian who hasn't spent a vacation here.
