Jacksonville, incorporated in 1842, is located in Onslow County and is home to MCCA Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River.
In 1941 Camp Lejeune was established and Jacksonville has experienced a rapid growth since that time. Prior to that time the town was described as quiet and where the most profitable business was operating a restaurant for a small group of individuals. That changed and within a few days the population started to boom with workers coming to the area to work on defense projects as part of the war effort. It wasn't long until the real estate developers began building and selling homes and lots.
In 1990 the city annexed portions of Camp Lejeune Marine base and in 2010 population had grown to 82,000, with about half living aboard Camp Lejeune and New River Air Station. Today there are new houses under constructions and many new and pre-loved homes for sale.
The medical needs of the community are met through Onslow Memorial Hospital and Coastal Carolina Community provides advanced educational opportunities.
